tissues at the ready...

i won't be posting for a while. "but why danny?! WHY?!". alright, calm down. the simple fact is, i will be lying on a beach in the caribbean, drinking rum for a fortnight. i'm off to the dominican republic tomorrow with t'wife, and i don't plan to even look at a computer for the whole two weeks.

but listen. you will get through this. go out and try and make some new friends. i'll be back before you know it.

"irc is just multiplayer notepad"

i know bash's quote database has been around for years - i was first pointed at it in 2002 - but it's worth re-mentioning now and again just in case there are some who haven't heard of it. i think this really is one of the funniest places on the net. yeah, it's usually geeky, sometimes offensive, but often laugh-out-loud funny. i check the latest quotes once a week when i'm bored or grumpy. i'm bored and/or grumpy more than once a week, but i only use one weekly incident as a reason to visit bash.

if you want to give it a try, but can't be bothered to read through the latest, just check out the top 200 submitted quotes to read such simple beauties as:

<mage> what should I give sister for unzipping?
<Kevyn> Um. Ten bucks?
<mage> no I mean like, WinZip?

rootdown is dope. word is bond.

we all like free stuff don't we? eh? and if, like me, you like hip hop too, rootdown radio is the place to be.

every monday, rootdown posts a 30 minute hip hop mix by dj mr werks, of classic cuts and brand new tracks - and some sweet funk gets thrown in there too now and then (gill scott heron anyone? yes please). they're up to show number 26, and you can download numbers 1 to 25 too. incidentally, the archive only lists shows 1 to 21 at the moment - bloody lazy web developers - but a clever person can change the mp3 name to the show they want to get shows higher than 21.

the sound quality isn't the greatest you'll hear - for shows 1 through 13 anyway - and you wonder why they don't set this up as a podcast so you don't have to manually download it every monday, but with artists like quasimoto, gangstarr, mf doom, brand nubian, etc, etc, etc, you can forgive anything.

while you're there, grab mr werks 30 minute best of james brown mix from the 'news & reviews' section too, and get on the good foot.

ie6 and ie7, sitting in a tree...

i'll skip over the "internet explorer 7 beta has been released" announcement as, unless you've been locked in a cell (without internet access) for a couple of days, you already know that. however, being a developer, these types of announcements are a double edged sword. on the one hand, it's exciting to see what we can do with this new browser, but on the other hand, we can't really install it as we still need to test in ie6.

so i started looking around for a standalone version 7 straight away, and immediately found a way to localise the release; a method involving deleting most of the install files, and then creating a text file called 'iexplore.exe.local'. without a second thought, i gave it a go and was really happy when i was able to use ie7, and still open ie6. but, yes 'but', a strange thing happened. typing an address into ie6 caused the requested page to open in firefox (my default browser). as firefox was open when i tried this, i closed it down and typed another address into ie6. it opened up firefox and loaded the page. not happy, and my advice is stay away from this method.

but fear not, like a certain bank’s advertising slogan in the uk, 'there is another way'. rather than having the full ie6 version and running ie7 as a standalone app, it seems that it is possible to install ie7 over the top of ie6, and run ie6 as a standalone. just install ie7 in the normal way, then grab the internet explorer 6.0 eolas (xp).zip from skyzyx downloads, extract the files, and run iexplorer.exe. done and done.
